Tucson Station Broadcasts Porn During Super Bowl

From here:

A short clip of a pornographic movie cut into a Comcast broadcast of the Super Bowl in homes in and around Tucson.

Officials at Comcast confirmed that its signal was interrupted during the Super Bowl, but the company is still working to figure out how porn broke into its cable feed.

Engineers at Comcast will be working throughout the night to determine what happened, said Kelle Maslyn, a Comcast spokeswoman.

The Star newsroom erupted with calls from irate viewers shortly after 7:30 p.m. who said that the porn cut into the broadcast just after Cardinals player Larry Fitzgerald scored a touchdown on a pass from Kurt Warner to give the Cardinals the lead with less than two minutes in the game.

Callers said that the clip showed a woman unzipping a man's pants and included full frontal male nudity.

So, I'll admit, I find this a little funny. However, it's certainly not appropriate for any young schoolchildren watching, and given that the Super Bowl started at 3 or 4 PM Arizona time (they're one of them weird states that doesn't do DST), there would have been plenty of children watching.

Still, it's more amusing than any of the commercials, which, on the whole, were pretty lame.

Now That the Steelers Won a Record Sixth Super Bowl...

...Spring training is only two weeks away.

Hope you're ready.

The most stressful and least wanted job in American may very well be Super Bowl referee. I am *so* glad I am not that guy...

Ten Things You Learn at a Football Party

1) All conversation stops for THE BIG PLAY, and then starts again as soon as the play is done.

2) It is possible for ten people to empty a fridge of all alcohol over the course of eight hours and still remain sober enough to hold rational conversations.

3) It takes three graduate students (among a room full of them) to figure out how to operate the self-timer on a Canon Powershot.

4) The idea that there will be an all-Pennsylvania Super Bowl is beginning to sound like a real one.

5) Steelers fans are crazy.

6) It is always possible to find Syracuse fans.

7) There is a feeling of disappointment when you can't help your parent, being "forced" to watch a football game at a convention, escape the boredom of a sport he or she doesn't like.

8) Kickers have an odd love affair with hand-warmers.

9) Between the Ravens, Eagles and Cardinals, it's a good year to be a (fan of a) bird (team).

10) There's no better way to end the day than with some old teen movies--like, for example, The Craft.

The Price Is Right (Postgame Notes 14 September 08)

The Yankees won the game, but today belonged to Derek Jeter.

Jeter needed just three hits today to tie Lou Gehrig's record for career hits at Yankee Stadium, and...wow, the Jets need a kicker...I mean, Jeter did just that, going 3-4.

His Gehrig-tying hit came on a solo home run, perhaps not in true Jeterian up-the-middle fashion, but it did make you remember, if just for a moment, that watching Derek Jeter is watching greatness.

The other story of the game, and no, I don't mean Carl Pavano getting hurt (again), was the major league debut of David Price.

He came in early for an ineffective Edwin Jackson and motored through the Yankee lineup as though it was an AAA line up.

Okay, so given the offensive struggles, that might not be saying much, but even so...

Right. Going to moan about the lack of defense from the Jets. Pulling my hair out now...

Giants fans, enjoy your win.

They Might Be Giants

Wow.

I can't really say much more than that.

It doesn't get much more storybook, much more Cinderella, than that. There are games. There are Super Bowls. There are the ones we will remember for the rest of our lives.

This is one of them.

It wasn't just a Super Bowl. It wasn't just a championship game.

It was the New England Patriots going for perfection, dominating nearly everyone on the way. It was Tom Brady, American Icon, and Giselle. It was Randy Moss and an indomitable offense, and Asante Samuel and a perfect defense.

It was the New York Giants finding themselves somewhere no one expected. It was Eli Manning, kid brother of Peyton, wondering what the hell else he had to do to prove he belonged. It was starting 0-2, wondering why Tom Coughlin was still there, and then a turn around for the ages. It was beating Dallas, their biggest rival, and then beating Green Bay, in overtime, on a 47 yard kick that they probably shouldn't have made.

If there's ever a team to make a movie about, this is it.

It's not 'they might be Giants'. They ARE Giants.

Giants Among Men

There are football games.

There are classics.

And then, there is Ice Bowl the Second: The Curse of the Missed Field Goal

I'm not a Giants fan. I don't hate the Giants, they aren't a bitter rival like the Red Sox, Rangers or Patriots, they're just not my team.

So I watched the NFC championship game today with a bit of an open mind. Mad respect for the Packers and their history, and Brett Favre, for sure, but also respect for the Giants. They are, after all, a New York team that was playing for the possibility of playing New England...

It seems like such a long time ago that the Giants and the Jets both started the season at 0-2 and the analysts said the Jets would be the ones to pull out of it...

For the first time since 2003, a local team has a chance to win a major title, and they can beat New England while doing it.

Again, I'm not a Giants fan. Any other AFC team in the Super Bowl than the Patriots, I'd be rooting for the AFC team, but the Patriots are a New England team, and most of you know how that sits with Yankee fans.

So on that basis, LET'S GO GIANTS, and bring a little sports glory back home, where it belongs.

By the way, I froze just watching that game. Are the linebackers insane playing with bare arms?

Wait, I'm not sure I want that one answered...

Monday Midnight Melee (or something like it)

You know, I had no plans to watch the Ravens/Pats, but when I turned it on for the heck of it, Baltimore was up, so I kept watching.

I am not a Ravens fan. I am to the Patriots what I am (as a Yankee fan) to the Red Sox and, as a liberal, to (most of) the Republican Party.

yet I was gripped by what I saw: pure grit on the part of Baltimore. They weren't supposed to have the talent to hang with them, let alone the strength to nearly win it...but if it wasn't for a time out that should not have been taken, they would have had it won.

Even still, the last play echoed the Super Bowl between the Rams and the Titans a few years ago...so...damn...close...

You don't have to be a football fan to appreciate tonight's game.

I received this email from the folks over at WasWatching:

Not sure if you saw this, but, just in case, I wanted to share the link:

Thanks again for helping to get the word out on this one. I think it helped!

The link is worth a click. It's amazing what the fans can do when they band together. For any of you that found the P46 campaign through PBP and wrote accordingly, my thanks.

I have accepted an offer to participate in a weekly sports webcast; the link can be found here.

I have no idea how it will turn out, but tune in on Wednesday, at 9 PM, and see how it goes!

I'm sure most of you saw my posting on PeteAbe's blog, but in case you haven't, I found out today that I made a perfect score on the writing portion of my GRE.

It's certainly not a true test of my writing ability, but as someone that rarely tests well, I was elated by the news.

Catch you all tomorrow evening, maybe by then there will be some real news regarding Santana

Change of Address, but not really.

Could this be? Could the Jets actually win a game?

(time elapses)
(Jets fail, Skins ball)
(more time elapses)
(Washington attempts long FG for win)

Nope. You know, the Jets could have a fifty point lead, and I still wouldn't trust them to keep it...

Anyway, that aside, some semi-important information:

Purist Bleeds Pinstripes can now be reached at http://www.puristbleedspinstripes.com or http://puristbleedspinstripes.com. You can still get here by the old .blogspot address, but this should be easier to remember.

At any rate, it feels so much more official. I like it!

Also, with the new address I also get a shiny new email address! So, while you're still welcome to contact me at rglass@syr.edu, the new official 'contact Rebecca' email address is Rebecca@puristbleedspinstripes.com.

Do yourself and those around you a favor, and don't try to say it five times fast...
