Pregame Notes 2 April 2008

The Yankees are coming off of (another) Opening Day win, so spirits are high. The Yankees did a lot of little things right last night; and we hope it bodes well.

Mike Mussina takes the mound tonight, as Andy Pettitte, the normal #2 starter is still on the retroactive DL (he should be fine for this weekend). Make no doubt about it, every game Mussina pitches this year will be under intense scrutiny after last year.

The important thing to remember, however, is that despite Mussina's abysmal August last year, he did win ten games. Make every argument that you want that they weren't wins against "quality teams", but ten wins is more than the difference between a playoff spot and not.

The other thing to watch for tonight: at bats with RISP. Last night, Johnny Damon got a lead-off triple, but the Yankees could not bring him home to score. This dogged the Yanks all last year, especially in the postseason, and they have to make sure it doesn't happen again.

I've decided to keep track of the runs the Yankees score this year, so check out the sidebar. I'll try to update every game, or at least once a week.

Check back later for a postgame recap.
